Consortium as a whole

The establishment of a strategic research domain entitled ‘3D Disease Cancer Models’ within UMINHO implies, in a first chance, the convergence of efforts from the previous existing research domains, namely ‘Advanced Biomaterials for Regenerative Medicine’, ‘Nanomedicine and Stem Cells’ and ‘Tissue Engineering’. However, the in deficit knowledge on cancer research of UMINHO could be circumvent by the establishment of partnership with European Group Leaders on the identified complementary research fields, namely on Tumour Imaging, Bioinformatics, Cell Engineering, Nanotechnology and Cell Metabolism & Signalling. The interaction and exchange of knowledge and secondments between UMINHO and FoReCaST partners, by means of training actions, will lead to the successful progress of such strategic research domain within UMINHO.
The Laboratory of Neuropharmacology, Neurooncology and Neural Engineering (LNNN) Research Group, founded by Prof. Philip Lazarovici and located at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI), will be involved in bio-imaging training actions, contributing to accelerate the scientific knowledge on the Metabolic Glycoengineering for Tumour Imaging through the combination of cellular, molecular and pharmacological related activities and technologies.
Complementary to the ultimate objective of accelerating drug discovery or establish novel pharmacological targets, the Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge (UCAM) will be responsible for providing the training on modelling the pharmacokinetic action of the drugs, including GFs and drug combinations, simulations of biomarker responses and pharmacodynamic modelling, under Bioinformatics.
The Institute for Technology Inspired Regenerative Medicine Complex Tissue Regeneration Department (MERLN) at University of Maastricht (UMAASTRICHT) will be involved not only in training of research aspects dealing with the development of 3D models, namely by using nanostructured surfaces, nanoparticles and nanofibres (related with the RL4 – Nanotechnologies), but also with the ones related to Intellectual Property (IP) protection and IP licensing.

The Hubrecht Institute (HI), due to its unique expertise in signalling pathways, will have a great contribution in the training aspects for understanding the appearing and progression of cancer disease.

The perfect alignment of HI competences with the identified RL5 – Cell Metabolisma & Signalling), is also complemented by the Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment at Candiolo (IRC) of the University of Torino, which will provide training in the area of basic and clinical cancer research, namely complex systems and Post genomic biology, cell migration and angiogenesis. All these efforts on understanding the cell-cell and cell-ECM interactions will allow the development of a strong knowledge on tumour progression, invasion and metastasis.

Considering the fundamental role cancer stem cells into proliferation, angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis of solid tumours (e.g. osteosarcomas and melanomas), the Laboratory of Regenerative Medicine, leaded by Prof. Ranieri Cancedda, located at the Instituto Nazionale per la Ricerca sul Cancro (UNIGE), will be involved in training actions related with the pathology of bone tissue, which is closely aligned with the RL3 – Cell Engineering. Specifically, gene expression and behaviour of bone forming and bone depositing cells cultured in 2D and 3D dimensions, and their progenitors will be addressed.
